NordVPN Features | NordVPN Review

Before we explore NordVPN’s ease of use, compatibility, and security, let’s take a closer look at some of its key features:

Split-Tunneling

Split-Tunneling is a feature offered by NordVPN that allows users to route specific applications or website traffic through the VPN tunnel while other data is sent directly to the Internet.

This helps in improving the overall internet speed and saves bandwidth as only the important traffic is routed through the VPN.

NordVPN split tunelling | NordVPN review

With split-tunneling, you can choose which apps or websites you want to protect with NordVPN and which ones you want to access through your regular internet connection.

This way, you can enjoy faster streaming, gaming, and browsing while still staying protected when accessing sensitive websites. The split-tunneling feature is available on NordVPN’s desktop clients for Windows and macOS, as well as on the NordVPN app for Android.

Smart DNS

NordVPN’s SmartDNS feature is a service designed to provide users with access to geo-restricted content without the overhead of encryption.

The main purpose of SmartDNS is to allow users to access streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and others from anywhere in the world without having to deal with buffering or slow speeds that can occur with a VPN.

SmartDNS works by redirecting the DNS queries of specific websites to NordVPN’s own DNS servers. This enables NordVPN to resolve the website’s IP address and unblock the content, all without the overhead of encrypting the data.

NordVPN custom DNS | NordVPN review

SmartDNS doesn’t provide any privacy or security benefits, as it doesn’t encrypt the traffic or hide the user’s IP address. However, it’s a useful tool for users who are looking to access geo-restricted content and want to improve their streaming experience.

NordVPN’s SmartDNS feature is available to all NordVPN users as part of their subscription, and it can be used in conjunction with the VPN or as a standalone service.

The SmartDNS feature is supported on a wide range of devices, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and smart TVs, among others.

Threat Protection

NordVPN’s Threat Protection is a service that’s designed to provide enhanced protection against a range of online threats, including malware, phishing, and other forms of cyberattacks.

This feature works by using lists of known malware URLs to monitor incoming traffic and identify potential threats.

When a threat is detected, NordVPN’s Threat Protection feature will automatically block the connection, helping to prevent the user from being exposed to the risk of cyberattacks and data theft.

Nord Threat Protection | NordVPN review

Threat Protection can provide real-time reporting on the status of downloaded files on Windows and MacOS, even if they’re not connected to NordVPN. Any malware that’s downloaded is instantly deleted by Threat Protection.

For Mobile users, there’s Threat Protection Lite, which only provides ad and malware blocking when connected to NordVPN’s servers.

NordVPN’s Threat Protection feature is an essential tool for users who require high levels of security and privacy when connecting to the internet.

Kill-Switch

NordVPN’s Kill-Switch is a security feature that helps protect the user’s online privacy and data in case the VPN connection is unexpectedly interrupted.

The Kill-Switch feature is designed to shut down certain applications automatically or the entire internet connection if the VPN connection drops to prevent sensitive data from being leaked and exposing the user’s identity and location.

By default, NordVPN’s Kill-Switch is enabled for all applications, and it’ll automatically stop all internet traffic if the VPN connection is lost. This helps to ensure that even if the VPN connection is lost, the user’s online activities and data remain protected.

NordVPN kill switch | Review of NordVPN

Additionally, NordVPN’s Kill-Switch feature is customizable, so users can choose which applications they want to shut down if the VPN connection is lost.

The Kill-Switch feature is an important security feature for VPN users, especially for those who use the VPN to access sensitive or restricted content or for those who are concerned about protecting their online privacy.

NordVPN’s Kill-Switch is available on all NordVPN apps, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, as well as on the NordVPN browser extension.

Dark Web Monitor

NordVPN’s Dark Web Monitor is a service that NordVPN runs that provides real-time monitoring of the dark web for potential exposure of sensitive information, such as usernames, email addresses, and passwords.

With Dark Web Monitor, users can be alerted if their personal information has been found on the dark web, allowing them to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their online identity.

nordvpn dark web

The feature uses complex algorithms to constantly scan the dark web and compare the information found in NordVPN’s database of known stolen data, providing you with immediate notification of any potential exposure.

By monitoring the dark web and providing users with instant notification of any potential data breaches, NordVPN’s Dark Web Monitor helps to ensure that users are one step ahead of online thieves, scam artists, and hackers.

Dedicated IP

NordVPN’s Dedicated IP feature is a premium service that provides users with a unique and static IP address separate from the shared IP addresses used by most VPN users.

With a dedicated IP, users can have a more stable and consistent connection to the internet, making it ideal for tasks that require a reliable and dedicated IP address, such as online banking, accessing certain websites, or using remote desktop tools.

The dedicated IP address is exclusively assigned to a single user and can’t be shared with other NordVPN users, providing an extra layer of privacy and security.

Furthermore, having a dedicated IP address can also help to improve the speed and performance of the connection, as the IP address isn’t shared with other users on NordVPN, reducing the potential for slowdowns and congestion.

NordVPN’s Dedicated IP feature is an ideal solution for users who require a more stable and secure VPN connection and is an excellent option for those who need to perform critical online activities that require a reliable and consistent IP address.

Double VPN

NordVPN’s Double VPN is a security feature that provides users with an additional layer of protection by encrypting their internet traffic twice. The Double VPN feature works by routing the user’s internet traffic through two servers before it reaches the internet instead of just one.

This creates two separate encryption layers, making it more difficult for anyone to intercept or monitor the user’s online activities.

The Double VPN feature is useful for users who are concerned about online privacy and security, as it provides an added layer of protection to their internet connection.

For example, users can use the Double VPN feature to encrypt their internet traffic when accessing sensitive websites or when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

The Double VPN capability is even available as a browser extension

Additionally, the Double VPN feature can also help users bypass internet censorship, as the user’s IP address will be changed twice, making it more difficult for anyone to track the user’s online activities.

NordVPN’s Double VPN feature is available on all NordVPN apps, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Users can select the Double VPN option from the server list and choose which servers they want to connect to.

The Double VPN feature is also available in NordVPN’s browser extension.

Meshnet

NordVPN’s Meshnet feature uses a decentralized network of servers to create a secure and private connection between the user and their devices.

This allows you to send files and messages between each device in the Meshnet using NordVPN’s encrypted connections, ensuring that each network transmission is protected by the same VPN technology you trust while browsing.

NordVPN meshnet | NordVPN review

Each device that’s covered by NordVPN is opted into Meshnet by default, but you can also add an extra fifty devices into the encrypted network.

This helps to enhance the privacy and security of the connection and can be particularly useful for users who require a secure and reliable VPN connection for sensitive or critical applications.

Secure Encryption

NordVPN uses strong encryption algorithms to secure your online data and protect your privacy. It implements AES-256 encryption, which is considered one of the most secure encryption algorithms available.

This encryption algorithm uses a 256-bit key length, which makes it virtually impossible for even the most powerful computers to crack.

NordVPN also uses the industry-standard protocols OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec, which are both known for their robust security. There’s also NordLynx, which is NordVPN’s in-house VPN protocol based on WireGuard.

All these factors combined make NordVPN’s encryption highly secure and reliable for protecting your online data and privacy.

24/7 Support

NordVPN’s support team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that you can receive support at any time of the day or night, no matter where you’re located.

The team is knowledgeable and well-trained, able to assist you with a wide range of technical and non-technical issues.

Furthermore, NordVPN offers a variety of support channels, including live chat, email, and a comprehensive knowledge base, giving you multiple options for getting in touch and resolving any issues you may encounter.

The 24/7 support team is a key component of NordVPN’s commitment to providing excellent service and support to its customers, helping to ensure that users have the best possible experience when using NordVPN.

Wide Device Support

NordVPN supports a wide range of devices and operating systems, making it easy for you to secure your online activities no matter what device you use. Plus, there are dedicated apps for:

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • iOS + Android
  • Linux

Allowing you to quickly and easily install and configure the VPN on your device. In addition to these, NordVPN also supports routers, which allows you to secure all devices connected to your home network with a single NordVPN account.

On top of this, there’s also browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, enabling you to secure your online activities directly from your web browser.

Furthermore, NordVPN provides manual setup guides for other platforms, including smart TVs, gaming consoles, and media streaming devices, making it as easy as possible to get NordVPN set up no matter which device you choose.

With its broad range of device support, NordVPN makes it easy to secure your online activities and protect your privacy on all your devices.

Strict No-Logging Policy

NordVPN’s No-Logging policy is a commitment to not collecting, storing, or sharing any information about its users’ online activities.

The policy applies to all NordVPN services, including the VPN and NordLocker, and covers information such as the websites visited, IP addresses, timestamps, and any other data that could potentially be used to identify a user.

This policy designed to protect the privacy and security of its users, ensuring that their online activities can’t be tracked, monitored, or shared with any third party. It’s a key component of NordVPN’s commitment to providing the highest level of privacy and security to its users.

As such, NordVPN is regularly audited and verified by independent security experts to ensure compliance with their own no-logging policy.

By not logging any user data, NordVPN provides its users with a truly private and secure online experience, ensuring that their online activities are protected from prying eyes.

NordVPN ‘s Ease-of-Use | NordVPN Review

Before we delve deeper into NordVPN’s performance and security, let’s take a closer look at its compatibility and ease of use and installation.

What Devices Can I Use NordVPN on?

NordVPN is compatible with a wide range of devices and operating systems. With NordVPN, users can protect their internet connection on their computers, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and other devices.

Here’s our list of some of the devices and operating systems that NordVPN supports:

  • Windows — The Windows app is easy to install and use, and it provides users with access to NordVPN’s entire network of servers and features.
  • MacOS — The MacOS app is designed to provide users with a fast, stable, and secure VPN that’s just as good as the Windows app.
  • iOS — NordVPN’s iOS app that allows users to protect their internet connection on their iPhones and iPads.
  • Android — The Android app allows users to access their NordVPN connection on their Android smartphones and Android tablets.
  • Linux — NordVPN provides Linux users with access to its VPN service via a command line interface.
  • Smart TVs — NordVPN is compatible with many smart TVs, including Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, and others which allows you to protect your internet connection and access a wider range of content.
  • Routers — NordVPN is also compatible with many routers, including Asus routers, Google Wifi, and others. Once you’re set-up, all devices behind the router are covered by NordVPN.

Let’s dive a little deeper into the user experience for each of these apps, as not all of NordVPN’s apps perform the same on each platform:

Android

NordVPN is one of the few VPN providers that offer a full Android app for their VPN, but it’s clear from the moment you open the app it’s received just as much love as the PC version. Hence it’s one of the best Android VPNs on the market.

There’s a very functional green on white theming to everything, which makes the app easy on the eyes as you pick your server location from the world server location map. We gave the Android version a shot and found that the user experience was great the whole way through.

You can download the NordVPN app from the Google Play Store, which means there’s no need to enable any extra permissions. Login is handled with your NordVPN username and password, and once you’re in with full access to most of NordVPN’s features.

NordVPN android dashboard

We found the Meshnet feature didn’t take a lot of time to set up. Often, with home networks, it can be a frustrating case of continually resyncing devices until they finally detect each other.

However, we found that our NordVPN mobile device detected our desktop Meshnet device quickly. File transfer between the devices was pretty quick, although we noticed that it was below our normal office speeds and closer to our cloud upload and download speeds.

Importantly, we found that Split-Tunneling is available on Android devices. This feature is critical on phone devices, where location changes can often affect the entire functionality of an app.

NordVPN’s Split-Tunneling makes it easy to fit a VPN into your life. We found when using it that the apps covered by the VPN ran slightly slower when streaming, although this is to be expected.

You’ll also find device coverage for NordVPN is great. It’s available on all modern Android devices, including Samsung, Google, and Huawei devices, as well as tablets running Android 7+.

iOS

NordVPN on iOS feels a little more developed than the Android version, although it’s mainly the same. With that said, it’s by far one of the best iPhone VPNs.

Besides this, downloading it from the Apple App Store is a breeze, and once you’re logged in, you’ll find there are a bunch of tool tips for features on the app.

This is pretty handy when it comes to some of the more complex NordVPN features like Meshnet and Double VPN.

nordvpn ios dashboard

The settings options are split up into a bunch of icons you’ll find at the bottom of the app screen, which contains all the options you’ll need to set up your connection, Meshnet, or find statistics and app settings.

A quick-connect button lets you get straight into the action by choosing the closest server with the best connection speed. There’s also a server locator if you need to connect to a specific country, and this is made way easier with a favorites tab that lets you keep track of your top servers.

Mac

There’s a pretty consistent design to NordVPN’s apps, and the MacOS offering is no exception. Once you log in, you’re treated to a clean and minimalist world map accented with light greys and breezy blues.

It’s very reminiscent of a blown-up version of the iOS app, which makes it quite easy to pick out the server you want.

nordvpn mac dashboard

As far as features go, NordVPN on MacOS has most of the encryption protocols you’d find on Windows, with the addition of IKEv2 by default. We recommend NordLynx on MacOS for maximum protection, but it’s nice to see this protocol for compatibility.

Unfortunately, there’s no Split-Tunneling functionality on the Mac version of the app. This isn’t ideal, but you can still use the router app to decide which devices you cover with NordVPN.

Other than that, most of the features you’d expect to find on the Windows app are here too. It’s a great offering considering most Apple versions of VPN apps tend to drag behind in development.

PC

NordVPN offers a PC app for Windows that’s easy to set up and seamlessly integrates with the rest of your computer.

There’s the same flat, minimalist design to the NordVPN Windows app that you’ll find elsewhere, framing a world map you can scroll and zoom around to your heart’s desire.

There’s also a text list of servers you can choose from to the left, although you’ll probably just want to hit quick select unless you need a specific country.

NordVPN Obfuscated Servers Russia

Helpfully, NordVPN remembers the recent locations you’ve connected to in an automatically populated Recents tab, although it would be nice to set your favorite locations and server settings like in other versions of the app.

You can also check out a list of specialty servers, including Double VPN servers, P2P, and Obfuscated servers. These keep your VPN traffic hidden by disguising it as normal encrypted browsing traffic.

It’s super easy to add these servers using the NordVPN task bar on the left and to scroll down to Obfuscated servers.

Each feature we tried out was easy to access through the settings bar and performed as you’d expect. The VPN itself passed all of our leak tests, including DNS and IPv6 leaks, without any concerning results.

Meshnet automatically detects other devices that are logged into NordVPN, so we found it pretty easy to start file sharing off of the Windows desktop to other devices.

The kill switch also passed our suite of disconnection tests, remaining completely confidential in each case we put it through.

Linux

Unfortunately, NordVPN’s support for Linux devices isn’t as extensive as other OSes. While there’s a native app that you can download straight from NordVPN’s website, it’s not a graphical user interface like the beautiful apps you’ll see on MacOS and Windows.

Instead, the Linux app is terminal-only, so you choose your servers and settings by typing program options into the command line.

Most VPN providers don’t even offer this level of support, often content to offer the most basic level of support by giving you OpenVPN config files.

Compared to that, NordVPN’s app is pretty good, as it still ranks as one of the best VPNs for Linux. Connection times are near instant, and it’s easy to turn most features on with a single command, although Meshnet requires a little more work.

While we’d like to see a GUI based app in the future to bring NordVPN up to par with some of our other competitors like PrivateInternetAccess, the Linux app from NordVPN is functional.

The only other complaint we have is the lack of Split-Tunelling, although the ability to set certain IP addresses to be whitelisted from the automatic ad-blocker is a nice touch.

Browser Extensions

NordVPN offers three browser extensions — Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Edge. There are a bunch of common data leaks that can only be solved by using a browser add-on in addition to a VPN, so we’re happy to see NordVPN addresses this issue with their browser add-ons.

We tested out NordVPN’s WebRTC leak blocker and found that it successfully stopped WebRTC attacks.

nordvpn firefox extension rtc leaks

Some other providers, such as ExpressVPN, offer a full app interface through their browser add-ons. NordVPN’s browser extensions don’t quite offer this level of control, but they offer you the convenience of connecting directly in the browser just in case you need temporary coverage.

You can’t pick which city you’re in like the app, but you can pick which country you connect from. This one’s great if you need to check on a work email while you’re on holiday.

Routers

NordVPN offers a router app, which is really OpenVPN support for a bunch of commonly used consumer routers.

Thankfully, a comprehensive list of which routers are supported by OpenVPN is on their website. Not only that, but there are also step by step guides on how to update your router settings for each brand and firmware.

NordVPN on routers works quickly and without fail; however, it’s not as convenient as their app-specific solutions

Using NordVPN through your router certainly isn’t as convenient as using a device specific app, as you’ll need to log into your router every time you want to update your device settings.

This can be a real annoyance if you only need a temporary location change. Furthermore, you’ll have to disconnect from your device’s NordVPN connection when you’re behind a NordVPN router unless you want to incur some nasty connection speed penalties.

NordVPN for the router is great if you’ve got multiple devices that you need to cover under a single NordVPN location and you want to save some device slots in your subscription.

The help guides make it easy to set up, and while some other providers offer more advanced apps, NordVPN on routers works quickly and without fail.

How to Install NordVPN

Downloading and installing the NordVPN app is as simple as can be. We’ll walk you through it step by step so you can see how easy it is to get set up with one of the market’s leading VPN providers.

  2. Step 2 — Pick your NordVPN subscription plan.

  8. Step 8 — The installer will proceed with the installation process.

NordVPN Performance | How Fast is NordVPN?

NordVPN certainly claims fast and reliable servers, so we put them to the test.

Our speeds averaged 85-95Mbps during off-peak hours

Before we get started, we must point out that the speed of a VPN depends on many factors, including the user’s internet connection, the location of the VPN server they’re connecting to, and the overall load on the VPN network.

Using our office 100Mbps line, we noticed NordVPN would consistently pull around 85-95Mbps no matter which server we connected to. Even when connected to Japan, we’d still receive snappy and responsive web pages.

Streaming also remained lag-less, even when switching back and forth between streaming services and country locations. These tests were carried out at off-peak hours, however, so your mileage may vary.

NordVPN is clearly designed to provide its users with fast and reliable VPN speeds. It’s impossible for there to be no noticeable drop in connection speed, but NordVPN is one of the fastest VPN providers we’ve tested.

This VPN provider has a large network of over 5,000 servers located in countries all over the world, which helps to ensure that users can connect to a nearby server for fast and stable VPN speeds.

Additionally, NordVPN’s CyberSec technology helps to block ads, trackers, and malware, which can also help to improve users’ overall online experience by reducing the amount of data that needs to be transmitted over their internet connection.

We also tested out a few Double VPN servers to see how the connection holds up, and here we found that the connection during our speed tests dropped to around 70Mbps at the lowest. Although this feature also offers additional security, it may come at a speed cost.

While NordVPN’s speeds can vary depending on several factors, the VPN provider is committed to providing its users with fast and reliable VPN speeds, and it works hard to ensure that its VPN network is constantly optimized for speed and performance.

Whether you’re looking for a VPN for online privacy and security or simply to access a broader range of content from around the world, NordVPN is designed to provide its users with fast and reliable VPN speeds.

How Secure is NordVPN? | Is NordVPN Safe?

Security is the most vital feature of any VPN, but it’s a broad topic. Although the most obvious form is the security of the VPN network itself, we also want to consider how NordVPN’s data policy holds up, as well as their operational security.

Our research found that NordVPN is considered to be a safe and secure VPN service. NordVPN’s security was put to the test in 2019 when an unauthorized third party accessed one of NordVPN’s data hosts through a remote access tool left open by the hosting company.

Although this breach occurred, the way NordVPN’s servers are set up means that no information was leaked from the service itself.

NordVPN uses RAM-only servers to route all of its users’ internet traffic, which helps to protect their sensitive information and online activities from prying eyes by never saving anything to disk.

NordVPN also has a strict no-logging policy, so it doesn’t store any information about its users’ online activities or internet traffic, which helps to ensure that users’ privacy and security are protected at all times.

Additionally, NordVPN uses a variety of security technologies and protocols, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, and NordLynx, to help protect its users’ online traffic and to ensure that their VPN connections are always fast, secure, and stable.

NordVPN is also regularly audited by third-party security experts to verify that it’s providing its users with a safe and secure VPN service that is compliant with their no-logs claim.

While no VPN service can guarantee 100% safety and security, NordVPN carries out regular audits and external code tests to make sure each NordVPN product is free from potential exploits.

On the whole, NordVPN is designed to provide its users with a safe and secure VPN experience.

NordVPN’s Encryption Protocols

NordVPN uses encryption protocols to protect its users’ online data and activities from being monitored or intercepted by third parties. Here’s a list of some of the encryption protocols that NordVPN uses:

OpenVPN

OpenVPN is a popular, open-source VPN protocol that’s widely regarded as one of the most secure VPN protocols available. NordVPN uses OpenVPN as its default protocol, providing its users with a fast, stable, and secure VPN connection.

NordLynx

NordLynx is NordVPN’s own custom alternative to OpenVPN, based on WireGuard. WireGuard is a new VPN protocol that’s designed to be faster, simpler, and more secure than other VPN protocols.

NordVPN uses NordLynx to fix some of the outstanding security problems with WireGuard, making it one of the safest implementations of an encrypted VPN connection that you can get your hands on.

IKEv2

IKEv2/IPSec is a fast and secure VPN protocol that is widely used by VPN services, including NordVPN. IKEv2/IPSec is particularly well-suited to mobile devices, as it provides a fast and reliable VPN connection, even on cellular networks.

This protocol is favoured by Apple devices, and you’ll find it by default on the MacOS and iOS versions of NordVPN.

NordVPN’s Transparency Reputation

A VPNs transparency reputation is an important factor to consider when deciding whether a VPN is best for you. Here’s all the nitty-gritty details on NordVPN’s audits and logging policy.

Audits

NordVPN has been audited by a reputable third-party cybersecurity firm. In 2020, NordVPN commissioned an independent security audit by one of the leading cybersecurity auditing firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG Switzerland.

The audit covered NordVPN’s infrastructure, security protocols, and applications, and the results showed that NordVPN’s security measures met industry standards.

Furthermore, NordVPN has undergone multiple security audits since then, ensuring that the platform remains secure and that users’ privacy is protected.

Logging

NordVPN doesn’t keep any logs of its users’ online activities — this means that no logs are kept of the websites its users visit, the files they download, or the online content they access.

This helps protect the privacy and security of NordVPN users and ensures that their online activities can’t be traced back to them.

Additionally, NordVPN is based in Panama, a country that has strong privacy laws and doesn’t require VPN providers to keep logs of their users’ activities.

NordVPN Review Conclusion | Is NordVPN Worth it?

NordVPN is definitely a standout as far as VPNs go. On top of the fantastic core VPN service, NordVPN comes with a range of features designed to enhance both your security and convenience for one easy price.

The Double VPN service is great for users who need enhanced security on top of NordVPN’s custom NordLynx protocol, while Meshnet works great as a cloud hosting tool and virtual LAN configuration tool all in one.

While we didn’t see the advertised connection speed benefits from using the Double VPN feature, the normal NordVPN servers are seriously fast. It would be easy to recommend NordVPN sheerly based on how fast the connections are.

NordVPN’s real competitors are few, as only services like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access can compare. However, NordVPN is far cheaper than ExpressVPN and offers superior speeds over PIA.

While PIA has slightly better Linux support, in general we’d have to recommend NordVPN as our go-to VPN if you need a top-tier VPN at an affordable price.

Try it now risk-free for a full month for superb speeds, unblocking power, and complete online anonymity and security.
